- When is it?: Wednesday, January 29th (and usually the last Wednesday of every other month)
- Where is it?: The Lash, 117 Winston St, Los Angeles, CA 90013
- What kind of party is it?: Dark synth, industrial electro jams and dope visuals, plus live performances. Lots of dancers.
- Is it free?: Yes! 21+
- Who are the residents?: DR, who has 20+ years DJing dating back to rave days, and Nicholas, who has been collecting music on a similar timeline. Video Jockey Wes canvases the walls with his Blipverts. Floppy Disco has also helped out on visual duties a couple times, as well as DJing. Club Mutoid was conceived by Nicholas and DR, along with the creator of the Mutoid group on Facebook, Cory You of Vandalaze.
- How did it start?: “It started as a Facebook group, when Cory You of Vandalaze wanted to express zanier sides of “dark synth/industrial.” That became a fun spot to check out weird avant funk tracks and vids posted by musicians and listeners in our respective geo-domes. DR said, ‘let’s try and do this as a club’ and boom! He hooked up The Lash and the party started happening in July 2018. (We like the front room. It feels more like a happening.)” – Nicholas
- What’s something unique that happens at your party that people might not find elsewhere? “We feature a mixture of guest djs and live acts, most of which are folks whose names you may not be familiar. Also, the ‘sound’ of Club Mutoid is ever-changing, whilst retaining a common thread. You’re probably never going to hear the same song twice.” – DR
- What’s on tap for Wednesday?: “This upcoming night is going to be more coldwaves-ish with Virtigo of the Wreck Hall — an essential goth, synthy night. Our special guest is Sister Screamer, who writes moody music but is quite the songwriter. Expect to hear something oversized, synthetic, jerky, Western, paradoxical, slimey, far-off, and with orchestra-stabs crammed in there somewhere. Expect to hear something by Art of Noise or Cabaret Voltaire plus that one electro track you need to I.D. Expect to dance.” – Nicholas
Thanks so much to Nicholas and DR for telling me more about Club Mutoid. Get ready for Wednesday with Nicholas’s recent Metro Sessions mix!
